Join Kristin Plessel (University of Wisconsin-Whitewater) and Sidney Boquiren (Adelphi University) as they focus on fostering equity-mindedness by exploring the concepts of equity, equity-mindedness, and the contrast between deficit-based and asset-based approaches. Participants are guided through reflective exercises to identify pressing equity challenges in their work and practice reframing deficit-based narratives into asset-based language. A case study illustrates practical applications of these approaches in educational contexts. Attendees are encouraged to critically analyze their own practices, listen to student voices, and design equitable strategies that leverage strengths, identities, and community knowledge to create inclusive, growth-oriented environments.

Objectives:

  • Examine the terms equity, equity-mindedness, deficit-based and asset-based
  • Practice identifying deficit-based descriptions and converting it to asset-based with a neutral example
  • Identify ways to utilize asset-based practices in your context
